Mixtape 2.2 came from free and fun conversations I had with GroundWorks’ dancers during the creative process. Those conversations took me back to influences I use with my own company [AntonioBrownDance] in making work. Things such as using social media soundbites, clips from television shows, and movies but in an abstracted and artistic way that help guide the choreographic movement language. Being back at home in Cleveland also reminded me of certain things I used to do in my youth. One of the fondest memories I have is of making mixtapes with my dual deck cassette recorder. It was a process of discovery for me about my relationship with music and what music meant to me. Mixtape 2.2 is a variation on a work I did for my company and is a continuation of my lifelong relationship with music and sound. Now seeing what GroundWorks’ dancers bring to it, it takes me to a place of comfort, joy, excitement, and expression that I feel can connect to a variety of people and take them on an emotional journey of their own making. -Antonio Brown
