Victoria Rumzis (she/her) is a Chicago native and began dancing at Dancenter North. She continued her studies at Point Park University where she received her BFA in dance, graduating magna cum laude. Additionally, “Tori” received training at Axis Connect, Movement Invention Project, ODC and Salt Contemporary Dance. She has also had the privilege of performing as a company member with Aerial Dance Chicago, Ensemble180, Dance in the Parks, Hedwig Dances and New Dances (under the direction of Melissa Thodos and Julie Nakagawa). Along with performing, Tori has enjoyed working as a dance teacher, choreographer, and certified yoga instructor. The 28-year-old is now in her second season with GroundWorks DanceTheater.
How did you get into dance? I started dancing a little bit later than many at age fourteen. I actually got into dance as a form of physical therapy. I had scoliosis in junior high and my doctor recommended taking ballet to help with my alignment and core muscles to prevent bracing. I took a class, fell in love with it and kept going from there.
Before choosing dance, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I honestly didn’t really know. I was pretty confused up until my senior year in high school. I think I knew I wanted to pursue dance, but didn’t really know how to make that happen or if it was even possible. I was good at math in school and almost enrolled in college to be an accountant…quite the opposite from dance. I’m glad things worked out the way they did though.
What makes you a unique artist?
I strive to put my full intention and focus into whatever I do. Whether it be learning complex choreography or moving through the checkout line at Target, I try my best to be fully present.
Of the people you have worked with in your dance career so far, who have been the most influential? There are so many amazing artists I have drawn influence from. All of the amazing choreographers I have worked with this past year with Groundworks have had a big influence on me. I have felt so much growth and change in one short year.
How has being a certified yoga instructor impacted your dance career?
I originally got into yoga because of my mom. She is a fierce mother of six kids, a certified yoga instructor, and a studio owner. I grew up taking her classes and fell in love with the practice. I was very inspired by my mom and received my yoga certification under her tutelage about eight years ago. Yoga has helped me throughout my career by exploring the connection between breath and movement. It has also been really important for me in terms of daring for my body and injury prevention and as a secondary source of income.
What are your impressions of Cleveland? I have been in Cleveland for a year now and it has provided many great surprises. I am a big foodie and have loved exploring the restaurants here. My favorite spots are Le Petit Triangle Café, Amba, Tremont’s The Spotted Owl, and Velvet Tango Room. The perfect post-rehearsal spot is 1942 Tacos and Tequila!
Do you have any hobbies?
I enjoy cooking, crocheting, doing puzzles, watching a silly TV show and listening to oldies music.
What’s one thing people don’t know about you?
People might not know that I am from a big family. I am one of six kids.
