The Dance program at Cleveland State University’s mission is to make dance accessible to all CSU students and the surrounding community. It is dedicated to provide students, professionals and general public with opportunities to participate and view dance as a performance and creative artform, educational tool, and recreational activity.
In 2012, GroundWorks was invited to become the Professional Dance Company in Residence for Cleveland State University. For many years, GroundWorks shared a strong relationship with the dance department, which included co-presenting master classes and workshops about once a year. The opportunity for expanding this relationship came about as the CSU dance and theatre department moved into the Middough Building at Playhouse Square to become part of the CSU Arts Campus. With newly renovated facilities in the Allen Theatre space and two well-appointed studios in the Middough building, the dance and theatre department could begin to offer the space needed for expanded activities. Now in its fourth year as the resident professional dance company at CSU, GroundWorks spends at least three weeks each year in residence on campus with our own artists as well as our visiting artists from around the world, providing teaching opportunities, as well as opportunity for personal connections with the students. In return, CSU Department of Dance and Theatre presents GroundWorks in performance each fall on the Allen Theatre stage. GroundWorks produces an annual performance series in this theater, the size of which is ideal for dance performance, and which also has the highest level of technical capabilities that Playhouse Square has to offer.
The CSU Summer Dance Intensive offers a unique opportunity for GroundWorks to “share” visiting artists with CSU and to connect with many other dancers – ranging from high school students to professionals to seniors, spanning the dance community in Northeast Ohio and beyond.
